Q: How do I know if my child has the flu or just a cold?

Q: I believe my child has the flu.  How do I know if I should bring him/her in to see the Doctor?

A: You should bring your child in to be seen if he/she meets any of the following criteria:

  1. Fever in ANY child ≤ 3 months old.
  2. Any fever of 104°F or higher.
  3. Any persistent fever > 100°F lasting more than 2 days.
  4. Any fever accompanied by inability to take adequate liquids, listlessness, vomiting or diarrhea.

Q: If we do visit the clinic and it is the flu, how should it be treated?

A: If you come in to the clinic within 48 hours of symptom onset and are in a high risk category, you may be given the medication, Tamiflu®, which should help shorten the duration of your illness.

Q: How do I know if I am in a high risk category?

A: High risk categories include:  pregnancy, children under 5 yrs, elderly over 65 yrs and those with chronic medical problems.

Q: I’ve heard the H1N1 can lead to other more serious complications.  Is this true?

A: Yes, that is the reason for prompt treatment if severe symptoms exist.  H1N1 can weaken the body’s immune system and lead to bronchitis, pneumonia, croup and other serious illness.
